Our study of Ancient Egypt was the central element of our Fifth Grade year as it was also the topic around which our class-play revolved. Students were entirely captivated by this amazing and mysterious civilization. From the incredible Old Kingdom and its great and mysterious pyramids, to the strong religious beliefs in the afterlife and the mysterious mummy-making, the students simply could not get enough. We studied the ancient Egyptian views on immortality, the building of the great pyramids, and the different Pharaohs of Egypt. We toured the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum in San Jose and read the novel The Golden Goblet, a dark mystery set in the time of the New Kingdom period of Ancient Egypt. Students drew maps, painted pyramids and the Nile in watercolor, and worked closely together to perform The Great Pyramid, a musical play set during the time of the building of the Great Pyramid in Giza.
During this study the work the children completed in class and in their books truly jumped up a notch. Drawings were more spectacular than ever before, writing more fully developed with details and descriptions, containing a heightened sense of design and detail that was truly new and exciting to behold.
